WINNERS OF 2025 Vlastislav Cerveny Prize

Dear participants of the Vlastislav Cerveny Student Prize,

thank you for submission of your innovative MSc. or Bc. thesis to the Vlastislav Červený Student Prize. The evaluation committee recognized the high quality and innovativness demonstrated in all submitted works. As a result, the selection process was particularly challenging, with only minor details distinguishing the top entries. Consequently, the committee selected two winners and awarded three honorable mentions.
The winners are:

* In the MSc. thesis category MSc. Angelin Mariam Binny of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat München (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences), supervised by Dr. Felix Bernauer, with the thesis entitled 'Seismic Response Evaluation in Six Degrees of Freedom: Insights from Shake Table Experiment'. The commission appreciated the innovative idea of the thesis, detailed description of theory, overcoming large dataset processing and clear message of the thesis with application to the anti-seismic design of buildings.

* In the Bc. thesis category, Bc. Jan Hohermuth of the Faculty of Science, ETH Zurich (Earth and Climate Sciences, Geology and Geophysics), advisor Dr. Cédric Schmelzbach and Dr. Alexis Shakas with the thesis entitled 'Measuring acceleration and rotation caused by tree sway using low-cost inertial motion sensors'. The commission appreciated thorough ability to program and set own instrumentation for testing and carrying out benchmarks with application to the tree damage.

The winners (thanks to our main sponsor INSET s.r.o. and sponsors EAGE, Seismik s.r.o., G Impuls Praha s.r.o., Faculty of Math and Physics and Faculty of Science, Charles University) will receive 1,000 Euro and 500 Euro (MSc. and Bc., respectively), free EAGE student membership for 2026 and a voucher for the EAGE online learning course.

In addition, the commission decided to award the Honorary award to

* Bc. Bohdan Rieznikov of Technical University of Ostrava (Faulty of el. Eng. and Computer Science) with Bc. thesis titled 'Classification of Seismic Events Using Recurrent Neural Networks' (advisor Dr. Marek Pecha) appreciating excellent review of methodology and is looking forward to future application.
* MSc. Helena Simić of University of Vienna (Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy) with MSc. thesis 'Seismic attenuation from seismic ambient noise recordings: application to short-term nodal deployment ', (supervisor Univ.-Prof. Dr. Götz Bokelmann). Committee appreciated novelty of the adopted approach and methodological approach which included assessment of uncertainties in the inverted attenuation and target of practical application for geothermal.
* MSc. Felix Schweikl of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat München (Department of Statistics) with MSc. thesis 'Time Series Analysis for Prediction of Geomagnetic Indices' (supervisors PD. Dr. Fabian Scheipl, Dr. Artem Smirnov, PD. Dr. Elena Kronberg) appreciating excellent statistical analysis of complex data and well written thesis.

The honorary award winner will receive the EAGE student membership for 2026 and an EAGE online learning course.

We invite all to Prague to the award ceremony on February 13 (or February 9) for in-person-online presentation, the awardees are going to be contacted shortly with the selection of suitable date and further details.
